Norton Gold Fields is seeking a passionate and driven Open Pit Graduate Geologist to join our high-performing team at Paddington Operations. This is an outstanding entry-level opportunity for a recent graduate ready to launch their geology career in a supportive, fast-paced open pit environment.
As a key part of our technical team, you will be exposed to the full life-of-mine cycle — from drilling and sampling to modelling and reconciliation.
DUTIES
- Responsible for Field Staff, Drilling Contractors and Ground Clearing Contractors when working on drilling programs under the control of this position, including, but not limited to:
- Understanding and monitoring/controlling breaches of Company policy
- Understanding drilling proposals and exploration/resource concepts
- Awareness of appropriate permits and statutory requirements of exploration techniques
- Work area inspections (drill sites, core yard etc.)
- Supervising and organising relevant Contractors as required
- Making relevant decisions concerning the drilling programs based on geological knowledge, experience and cost-saving parameters
- Awareness of environment and heritage, including, but not limited to:
- Rehabilitating drill sites after drilling
- Managing clearing for minimum environmental impact
- Awareness of environmental and heritage restrictions/guidelines
- Identify potential environmental and heritage areas
- Knowledge transfer by data acquisition and geologic interpretation, defining potential resources/reserves, including but not limited to:
- Resource definition through geologic interpretation/increasing geologic confidence
- Working autonomously with tasks completed to a consistent and high professional standard
- All drilling and sampling information under your control is to be stored in acQuire database promptly
- All documentation relating to a project should be filed according to the Paddington Technical Services Department standard
- Responsible for all QAQC procedures and analysis
- All 2D data is updated daily (i.e. cross-sectional interpretation, maps, etc.) according to the Paddington system
- Interpretation of drilling results and designing drilling programs
- Provide relevant information for weekly, monthly and statutory reporting.
- Periodic reports delivered on time and in the correct format, complying with overarching standards (e.g. JORC 2012, NI-43-101, SOX, etc.)
- Periodic presentations delivered on proposals and results
- Having a basic understanding of the local geology/mineralisation systems in the area(s) of responsibility
- Undertaking field tasks as requested, including but not limited to:
- Oversee that proper clearing, gridding and site preparation is undertaken within specified time frames
- Oversee all sampling undertaken within specified timeframes
- Oversee timely sample dispatch from the site
- Oversee that proper sampling procedures are followed (for RAB, RC, core and soil samples)
- Oversee that proper core handling procedures are followed (depth measurement, orientation marking, RQD mark-up, cutting and sampling)
- Oversee proper bulk density measurement (sample selection, cutting, treating, measurement and documentation)
- Ensure proper documentation is maintained (data sheets and sample submission forms)
- Ensure adequate quality control of gridding (accuracy, datums), sampling (standards and duplicates), bulk density measurement, and documentation (completeness and correctness of forms)
- Create and maintain a sample number register and a drill hole number register to ensure that numbers are not repeated
- Providing logistic support to field programs by identifying needs and ordering items in a timely fashion, including but not limited to:
- Liaise with Field Technician(s) every week to define ongoing equipment and field consumable requirements
- Identify ongoing freight, earthmoving and other contractor requirements. Liaise with contractors to ensure the timely provision of services to support field programs
- Communication, documentation and reporting, including but not limited to:
- Ensure an adequate dialogue is maintained between yourself and other field personnel, and between yourself and your line supervisor
- Ensure proper documentation is kept of all items, primarily in a formal filing system at Paddington, and that the documentation is accessible in the Perth Office and on site
- Ensure all issues are made known to all personnel
- Ensure vehicles are properly maintained and compliant with safety requirements, including but not limited to:
- Ensure vehicles are driven safely and responsibly
- Ensure compliance with speed limits and road conditions
- Ensure all vehicles have appropriate fire extinguishers
- Ensure all vehicles have adequate spare water and fuel
- Ensure that vehicles are inspected weekly and not used if unsafe
- Service vehicles on time
- Any other duties as required.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Tertiary qualifications in Geology
- Current unencumbered C/HR Western Australian Driver’s Licence
- Senior NPC clearance
- Senior First Aid (Desirable)
- Previous vacation experience in a Geology/mining role (desirable);
- Practical background or knowledge in at least some of the following is required:
- Resource definition (drilling)
- Exploration geology
- Database management
- Ability to engage team and others to solve problems, develop solutions and get things done.
- Ability to earn respect through fair treatment of people, clear task assignment, coaching, feedback and performance management.
- Ability to build and maintain positive relationships is required to achieve role’s purpose.
- Able to read and write English at an Australian Upper Secondary School standard.
- Understanding and skill in mining and geostatistical software.
